Buenos Aires experienced a boom in the 19th
century, taking its cue from Paris, and since then is often referred to as
the Paris of South America. The heart of the city's history is concentrated around the Plaza de Mayo
with the Town Hall, the Casa Rosada (the presidential building) and the
Metropolitan Cathedral, containing the tomb of Jose de San Martin,
Argentina's most revered national hero. Near the square are superb
restaurffffffffffffffants, movie theaters, boutiques, art galleries and the pedestrian
street Florida.
ShoppingBuenos Aires is a shopping mecca. Leather articles,
clothing, gems, knitwear and wines may be of interest. Rodocrosita, or
Rose of the Inca, is a semi-precious stone native only to Argentina. The
pedestrian street Florida features a wide choice of shops, including the
modern shopping mall Galerias Pacifico; San Telmo is a good place to
look for antiques.
Other Sites.Visit the colorful quarter of La Boca or San Telmo
district with its artist colony and well-known tango clubs. See the
Casa Rosada, the Presidential Palace. And consider searching out the
grave of Eva Peron, in the Recoleta Cemetery.GolfBuenos Aires Golf Club. The Buenos Aires Country Club is
a 27-hole course that hosted the Argentina Open, and South American
Amateur, 1994, one year after opening. |
