Cartagena de Indias, as it is officially called, is steeped in history and one of the most interesting cities in the Western Hemisphere. Located on Colombia's Caribbean coast, Cartagena's founding dates to 1533 and is credited to Don Pedro de Heredia. The most dominant of the many forts that guarded the approaches to Cartagena is the formidable fortress of San Felipe de Barajas, its massive walls towering 135 feet above sea level. Begun in 1657, it was captured and destroyed by the French in 1697. In the following century it was rebuilt into the impressive complex that it is today. Of main interest to visitors is the old walled city, where Iberian-style houses with central patios and balconies line the narrow, crooked streets originally designed for protection during assault. The old defensive bulwarks called Las Bovedas have been converted into a long row of colorful handicraft shops. In the old walled city of Cartagena, you will find an atmosphere reminiscent of the Spanish Main, the Inquisition and the 19th-century wars for independence. |
